Hubie will teach old-time fiddle
and banjo tunes, in several different keys and tunings.
Hubie first played bluegrass banjo in the
1950s but, while in college, a classmate named Mike Seeger showed him how to
play the clawhammer style. Years later, upon his retirement from the Air
Force, Hubie played clawhammer banjo as a Civil War reenactor. In 1988 Hubie
began to seriously learn the repertoire and techniques and studied with
Gerry Milnes, Ron Mullennex, Dwight Diller among others. He learned tunes
first-hand from old-time West Virginia fiddlers like Melvin Wine and Woody
Simmons and accompanied Woody on radio and on stage at the Augusta Old
Fiddler’s Reunion concerts. Throughout this time he played in various bands
including Heritage String Band, Dance All Night and Possum Frenzy. Hubie
twice won 1st Place in the Deer Creek old-time banjo contest at Westminster,
MD and in 1994 took 2nd Place in the
Senior Category at Clifftop. He released the CD “There Are No Rules!” a
joint project with Diane Jones in 1996 and in 1997 he recorded clawhammer
tracks on an album of Irish music with the Flying Cows of Ventry. Hubie has
taught the banjo at Westminster Community College and teaches intermediate
students at his home in Virginia.
