Beginner's Old Time Jam at
Jammin' Java |
| |
|
Here's the
news about a beginner's old time jam that Howard Jones and I have been
pondering recently.
1. We have a slot at Jammin' Java - 8:00AM on Saturday Mornings. Yep, that's
right, early Saturday when no one has anything else to do. More on that in a
later letter--it is the single most successful time we found in Minnesota,
so I thought we'd give it a try. The jams will be once a week.
2. I am committing to being there every Saturday morning at 8. I will play
banjo if there is a strong fiddler there, otherwise I hope to play fiddle
(one selfish reason for wanting to start this is just that).
3. I have recorded a CD of 24 old time time tunes. I will have one copy for
every person attending--FREE. I will try to keep at least 50 - 60 copies on
hand. These are the first 24 tunes we are going to play. Not these versions
which are all taken from old time recordings, but at least everyone will
have a chance to hear the tunes. Here are the tunes on the CD. the
performers are Tommy and Fred, Franklin George, Kirk Sutphin, the Skillet
Lickers, DaCosta Woltz's Country Serenaders, Some "Echoes of the Ozarks",
John Cohen, The Fuzzy Mountain String Band:
01. Mississippi Sawyer
02. Angeline the Baker
03. John Brown's Dream
04. New Arkansas Traveler
05. Big-Eyed Rabbit
06. Yellow Rose Of Texas
07. Old Molly Hare
08. Sally Ann
09. Sugar Hill
10. Get Along Home Miss Cindy
11. Raggedy Ann (Ragtime Annie)
12. West Fork Girls
13. Bonaparte Crossing The Rhine
14. Soldiers Joy
15. Cumberland Gap
16. Jaw Bone
17. Old-Time Back Step Cindy
18. Seneca Square Dance
19. Shooting Creek
20. The 28th Of January
21. Breaking Up Christmas
22. Old Joe Clark
23. June Apple
24. The Hangman's Reel
25. Bile Them Cabbage Down
26. Cluck Old Hen
4. Email me for a tune list
and a small article on Jam Etiquette which I will also make available in
hard copy to anyone who attends.
5. I want to contact the Old Time Herald, CABOMA, and the Greater Washington
Folklore Society. Other mailing lists as they come available.
6. Now, I would like to start the week after Easter, which will be the first
week of April. So the first tentative jam will be April 2.
May I ask all of you for help and support? Howard Jones has already helped a
great deal and we really want to get something going here on the Virginia
side to get newbie's involved. I foresee featuring special guest fiddlers,
banjoists and guitarists as we get going.
Also, may I have your suggestions? I am open to CD #2 with the many tunes I
have missed. I'm sure we will have a number of suggestions.
