 | December 30 A pre-New
Year's Eve party at Jill and Peter's place. Phil and Maureen came
from down the street, and Donna and Rosemarie drove in from Virginia .
Leslie and Barbara rounded out the group. Jill suggested that we
take turns around the circle suggesting a tune. That was fun.
It meant that everyone knew at least most of the tunes. Peter played
guitar (and we hope he starts coming to all our F~O~B sessions).
Pizza for dinner, plus finger foods, wine and beer, pep talk, gripe
session, laughter and tunes. Can't get much better than that as we
closed out our first F~O~B year together. |
 | December 19
Our
first F~O~B holiday party. Here's just a
few of the goodies! We played the tunes Diane taught us, Barbara
worked up a solo of Silent Night. Rosemarie knew it in German.
Marsha played it on her fiddle, Jill brought her guitar and led a few
rounds of traditional carols and backed us up on every tune we knew.
Phil played an original tune. Donna did some Mississippi John Hurt, Ruth
amazed us with her Santa collection, and Leslie took
pictures. |
 | November 13 Diane Jones
spent a day with us teaching us tunes from the West Virginia tradition.
We concentrated on learning the tunes by ear -- first listening to the
source and then to Diane playing the tune over and over, both fast and
slow. We were amazed as bit by bit we actually learned the tunes --
Grand Dad's Favorite, Wine's Delight and Pretty Polly. She
then treated us to renditions of Rainy Day, Duck on the Pond, Santa
Anna's Retreat and Sally in the Garden. Thanks Diane! We also
got to meet new banjo friends Lucy and Paul. |
 | October 2-7 Jill recorded a
very slow version of Shove that Pig's Foot... then scurried here
and there, making sure we all had a copy to listen to at our homes.
Once we had thoroughly listened she gave us, a couple of good hints on how
to play the tune and then taught us how to learn to play a tune by ear.
Boy are we proud of ourselves! |
 | September 26 New member
Jacalyn drove up from Accoceek and Michael and Phil were able to make it
this time so we had a full house. We played our tunes and
decided on new ones. |
 | September 18 - Road trip!
Tireless Jill dashes home after the Carlin workshop to pick up her husband
and Maureen, drive to Alexandria to get Rosemarie and then off to
Washington, Virginia to make a banjo night of it -- dinner out
topped off with a concert by Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman.

 | September 18 - Jill,
Barbara & Leslie attend a
Bob Carlin
workshop at HMT. We worked on how to join in at a jam when you don't
know the tune. Fun, informative plus we made new banjo friends.

 | September 17 -
Ken Perlman
Workshop. Dauntless, Barbara gets Ken Perlman to Ruth's house just
about on time for our Friday night workshop, despite being rear-ended in
D.C. rush hour traffic.
Ken
helped us work on right hand technique, taught us scales, answered our
questions and taught us Yellow Rose of Texas. He ended the
workshop by playing for us a few of his dazzling melodic tunes. |
 | August 22 Multi-talented
Bruce Hutton teaches us the 2-finger picking technique, entertains
us with banjo tales and then gave us our own private mini-concert singing
and playing on his collection of beautiful banjos. |
 | August 16 - Jill takes her
banjo to work for Kids Day. "We're going to sing Twinkle Twinkle
Little Star. Wish me luck!." |
 | August 6 - Barbara,
Rosemarie, and Rosemarie's daughter, Ellie, perform on banjo, banjo and
jug, at the monthly neighborhood Open Mic -- a good time is had by all. |
 | July 25 - Marsha, our first
fiddler, bravely comes to play with six banjos. She wins our
hearts when she exclaims "those banjos sound so sweet." |
 | July 16 - Rosemarie plays 3
banjo tunes at her swimming pool's monthly Open Mic -- way to go
Rosemarie! |
 | June 27 - Our first FOB
workshop with
Lea
Coryell. He is fabulous ~
patient, organized. What a good teacher. We worked on a modal
tune called Lonesome John as a group and then we met individually
with Lee for personalized critique and instruction. |
 | June 13 - Barbara plays the
banjo for the movement titled "Speculation" when the Washington
Conservatory Orchestra performs Virgil Thompson's "The Plow That
Broke the Plain." |
 | March 7, 2004 - Our
first FOB practice session |
